Er is verrassend weinig bekend over negatieve ervaringen tijdens psychotherapie. Dit omdat ze vaak niet systematisch worden geregistreerd in onderzoek. Lange tijd werd aangenomen dat praten geen kwaad kan en stond het aantonen van positieve effecten van psychologische interventies centraal. Maar zelfs bewezen effectieve therapieën kunnen bijwerkingen hebben.
